Hypnotherapy - Frequently Asked Questions

Is hypnosis real?

Yes, hypnosis is very real. Asking whether hypnosis is real is a bit like asking whether thought is real.Hypnosis is a genuine and natural mental state involving focused awareness and heightened responsiveness, something most people experience naturally in everyday life. All hypnosis is essentially self-hypnosis. A hypnotherapist doesn’t control you or command you; instead, they act more like a guide, helping you access this focused state in a safe and supportive way. We know our thoughts and imagination can have a powerful influence on how we feel, behave, and experience the world. Hypnosis works by engaging your inner dialogue and imagination, gently inviting you to explore new perspectives and responses.

Will hypnosis work for me?

Hypnosis isn’t something that’s done to you, it’s a natural state that people experience everyday, such as when you’re deeply focused or absorbed in thought. The more important question is whether hypnotherapy is the right approach for your particular concern. Hypnosis is widely used to support a range of medical and psychological issues, and many people find it a helpful and effective tool when it’s matched to their individual needs. A conversation together can help determine whether hypnotherapy is a good fit for you.

Will hypnosis help my anxiety?

What is the difference between hypnotherapy and hypnosis?

Hypnosis is an induced state of trance (not sleep) where the conscious part of the mind is deeply relaxed allowing more direct access to the subconscious which is responsible for accepting new ideas and suggestions. Hypnotherapy is providing therapeutic ideas and suggestions to clients during hypnosis.

Is hypnosis safe?

Hypnotherapy is considered safe for most people when provided by a properly trained practitioner. It is a collaborative and respectful process that supports positive change However, hypnotherapy may not be suitable for everyone. Individuals experiencing unstable or untreated mental health conditions (such as certain psychotic or dissociative disorders) may require alternative support or the guidance of a registered health professional before undertaking hypnotherapy.

A thorough initial discussion helps ensure hypnotherapy is an appropriate and supportive option for each person. Clients are always encouraged to ask questions and share any concerns prior to beginning sessions.

Can everyone be hypnotised?

Yes, we actually go into trance many times a day, if you have ever driven from point A to point B, but can't remember parts of the journey, then you have been in a trance. If you can daydream, you can be hypnotised!

Will I still be in control during a hypnotherapy session?

Most people who are new to hypnotherapy are concerned that if they really submit to the relaxation of hypnosis and go fully into a trance like state that they will no longer be in control of themselves and can be easily controlled by the hypnotherapist, however this is simply not the case. Although  your conscious mind is extremely relaxed it is always on hand to ensure that you are safe and will reject any information that is not in your best interest, you as the client are always fully in control of the session.
